Driver Training Discount for Youthful Operators

A Driver Training Discount may apply if an operator is under 21 years of age and has successfully completed 30 hours of classroom instruction and the State's requirement for driving experience.

New Jersey requires one of the following:

• 6 hours of "behind-the-wheel" training; or
• 3 hours of "behind-the-wheel" training and 12 hours of practice with an approved driving simulator.

In New Jersey, it is possible for a youthful driver to qualify for this discount but not receive a premium reduction because of the impact of other rating factors. However, the Driver Training information is kept on record and may produce a reduced premium later in the policy term.

Pennsylvania requires one of the following:

• 6 hours of actual driving experience (cannot include observation time in the car);
• 3 hours of actual driving experience exclusive of observation time in the car, plus either (A) 9 hours in a practice driving trainer simulator, provided that the actual driving and the simulator occur during the same semester, or (B) 12 hours in a practice driving trainer simulator if the actual driving and simulator do not occur during the same semester;
• 3 hours of actual driving experience exclusive of observation time in the car, plus 6 hours of multi-car range driving experience; or
• 2 hours of actual driving experience exclusive of observation time in the car, plus 4 hours of multi-car range driving experience, plus at least 6 hours in a practice driving trainer simulator.

Any driving trainer simulator used must be authorized by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

To apply for the Driver Training Discount, please provide a certificate signed by a school official or driving school instructor verifying that the classroom and behind-the-wheel training requirements have been fulfilled. Attach the student's name and your auto insurance policy number to the certificate, and mail or fax it to:
