Dwelling Policy
A Dwelling Policy provides coverage only for damage to a residential structure and its contents. Most consumers need a Homeowners Insurance Policy, which not only covers the building and contents but also provides insurance in case the consumer is determined to be legally liable for property damage or bodily injury of another person. The NJM Insurance Group will not offer a Dwelling Policy to a consumer who does not already have personal liability coverage through a Homeowners Insurance Policy for his or her primary residence on a separate home.
To be eligible to apply for a Dwelling Policy by New Jersey Manufacturers Insurance Company, you must live in New Jersey or Pennsylvania and meet our membership and underwriting requirements.
You are eligible under NJM's membership criteria if you or your spouse are:
- Currently employed by a member organization of the New Jersey Business & Industry Association; or
- Currently employed by the State of New Jersey; or
- The named insured or resident spouse on a current or previous NJM policy for Personal Auto or Homeowners of a vehicle; or
- A current or previous operator under an NJM Personal Auto insurance policy.
Applicants and all members of the household also must meet our underwriting requirements.
NJM's underwriting guidelines exclude coverage for certain types of risks. For example, we do not insure mobile homes, house trailers, commercial properties, or dwellings that house more than two families.
We also consider each applicant's claims history and the condition of the property in determining whether to provide coverage.
If you are not eligible for coverage by NJM, and if the dwelling to be insured is located in New Jersey, your application will be considered by NJM's subsidiary, New Jersey Re-Insurance Company, which currently does not provide policyholder dividends on Dwelling insurance.
