THE SAFE OPERATION OF OVERHEAD CRANES Overhead cranes are very prevalent in industry due to their ability to ease material handling efforts. When an accident occurs, it can be catastrophic. Accidents can be attributed to three areas: lack of adequate inspections, overloading or lack of operator knowledge. This video emphasizes five major areas for the safe operation of overhead cranes pre-operational checks, operational checks, planning the lift, operational rules and shutdown procedures. How to properly inspect chain and wire rope hoists is covered as well as pivot points, hoist drums and the overhead crane itself. Operational checks should include power, control, emergency stops, warning devices, limit switches and brakes. Planning the lift covers weight, dimension, characteristics, correct slinging and site specific hazards. Operational rules include safe weight of the load, lifting lugs, shock loading, visual contact, emergency procedures, never walk below load, leaving load suspended and dragging loads. A nine-step shutdown procedure is demonstrated. The video emphasizes that safe operation takes a dedicated effort of all involved. (18 Minutes)#830
