THE AMERICANS WITH DISABILLITIES ACT This video program establishes the basis for the Federal Law which became effective on July 26, 1992. It illustrates how this legislation affects workers. It also defines what is a disability and who is protected under the act. The program goes into detail in stressing the importance of job descriptions and qualifications. It also defines what is meant by reasonable accommodations as required by the act. In general, this program will motivate employees to welcome disabled co-workers to their facility. (18 Minutes)

The first area reviewed is proper dress, eye protection, hearing protection, foot protection and respiratory protection. The difference between a commercial mower and a home use mower is covered as well as the importance of proper maintenance, care of batteries and keeping blades sharp. Topics such as turning mower off during maintenance, removing the key, stopping for an unusual noise, clearing the area, ejecting items from chute, mowing across slopes, pushing hand mowers, refueling hot engines, fire extinguishers, safety cans, grounding and static electricity are discussed. It created tension among co-workers who were perceived as being slow. Employees who followed safety rules were teased. By ignoring the situation and even calling on the risk takers to "get the job done," management condoned and encouraged their risk-taking behavior. On the day of his injuries, John Martin was asked to service a large pump that was underneath a 250,000-gallon cooking vessel containing Black Liquor, a hot, caustic liquid used to cook wood chips in the paper industry.
