Workers' Compensation

Controlling Costs

Increased competition in today's business environment places significant pressure on employers to control costs. Premiums are based, in part, on the extent of policyholders' claims. Many costs associated with Workers' Compensation insurance are considered manageable expenses.

The NJM Insurance Group offers the following resources to help policyholders prevent accidents and control their Workers' Compensation insurance expenses:

Engineering Department

Our in-house Engineering Department inspects work facilities and explains the practical steps necessary to avoid costly injuries. The staff is composed of engineers, industrial hygienists and training specialists experienced in most areas of business and industry who help employers maintain a solid record of workplace safety. When a serious accident does occur, a representative can provide a loss analysis to reduce the risk of repeat injuries.

The staff conducts training seminars at the employer's site about workplace safety and careful operation of vehicles and equipment. NJM's online Video Training Library provides policyholders with access to more educational programs. Employers may borrow videotapes on such topics as construction safety, ergonomics, forklift operation, hazard communication, hearing protection, substance abuse and many more. NJM also offers policyholders a collection of booklets, posters and other literature regarding various safety topics.

Medical Utilization Department

Our in-house Medical Utilization Department - an integral component of NJM's Managed Care Organization - is staffed by certified health care professionals who monitor the use of medical services and provide expanded support and medical expertise to our claims and legal staffs.

Legal Assistance for Employers

NJM employs 18 experienced, full-time attorneys whose sole responsibility is to represent our policyholders before New Jersey Workers' Compensation judges. Most are certified as Workers' Compensation insurance experts by the Board on Attorney Certification of the Supreme Court of New Jersey. In this very specialized area of law, our staff attorneys are well known and respected in Workers' Compensation courts throughout the state.

Special Investigations Unit

The NJM Insurance Group's Special Investigations Unit (SIU), which has been in existence for more than 50 years, can work with employers to reduce the impact of insurance fraud on their premiums. The SIU Director is an attorney who previously held positions as a criminal prosecutor at both the county and state levels. The staff includes former law enforcement professionals with more than 25 years experience and veteran NJM claims adjusters who are well versed in handling legitimate cases and in questioning claims that appear suspicious. Using modern surveillance techniques, they help ensure that benefits are paid only for legitimate claims. Fraud is a crime with severe penalties in New Jersey. NJM urges policyholders to let us know of any reliable information indicating problems with a claim.

Clues of possible fraud include evidence of faked injuries, minor injuries which are exaggerated, or legitimate injuries or illnesses which occurred off the job. Additionally, an employee is not permitted to work at another job or attend school full-time while receiving Workers' Compensation temporary disability benefits.
