Halloween is a fun day for kids – dressing up as whoever (or whatever) they want to be and getting lots of free candy! Along with the excitement of this day are some precautions that should be taken. Here are 6 safety tips to remember while your kids are trick-or-treating this Halloween:

  1. Have a plan

    • Offer your child a healthy snack before going trick-or-treating so they won't want to eat all the candy right away.
    • Determine which route you're going to take before leaving the house, and what time to arrive back home.
  2. Walk safely

    • Use crosswalks and always look both ways before crossing the street.
    • Stay on the sidewalks! If there are no sidewalks, walk facing the traffic.
  3.  Use the buddy system

    • If you will be with a group of children, make sure each child has a buddy so that no one will be left alone at any time.
    • If kids are out without supervision, encourage them to stick to familiar, well-lit areas and always stay with friends.
  4. Stay visible

    • If you can, incorporate reflective tape in your child's costume or on their trick-or-treating bucket.
    • Carry a flashlight just in case.
  5. Check the candy

    • Avoid eating any candy with tampered, punctured, or torn wrappers. When in doubt, throw it out!
    • As an additional option, bags of candy may be brought to any Patient First Neighborhood Medical Center for a free x-ray on October 29-31, 2016 from 6-9 p.m.
  6. Be an extra cautious driver

    • Popular trick-or-treating hours are 5:30-9:30 p.m. so be especially alert during this time.
    • Drive slowly and be aware that children may be crossing the street at any moment.
