How To Renew Your Auto Insurance

An auto insurance policy has a policy term, which you can find on your declarations page. Most auto policy terms are 6 or 12 months long. At the end of a policy term, your insurance company will contact you about renewing the policy.

Renewal is a good time to review your policy and ensure you have the coverage you need and any available discounts. Notify your insurer if:

  • You have a new address
  • Your marital status has changed
  • There are more or fewer drivers in your household (whether or not they have their own insurance)
  • Your distance commuting to work or school has changed

What do you need to do to renew?

You will receive a bill for the first payment of your new policy period. Simply pay the minimum balance by the due date to renew your policy.

You may be able to save money on your auto insurance by setting up automatic payments or by paying in full at this time.

What if my auto insurer doesn’t offer renewal?

Auto insurers have the right to non-renew a policy for specific reasons defined in your state’s insurance guidelines and the insurer’s underwriting guidelines. If your insurance company chooses to non-renew your policy, they will provide proper notice to you, and you will have to search for another carrier. Start your search early so that you don’t have a gap in coverage.
