New Jersey Motorcycle and ATV Insurance

We've partnered with American Modern, a nationwide provider of specialty insurance, so you can make sure your motorcycle, ATV, or golf cart is covered.

New Jersey Motorcycle Insurance Requirements

In New Jersey, all motorists — including motorcyclists — are required to have insurance. A motorcycle is defined by the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission as "any vehicle with attached motors," including motorbikes, bicycles with a motor attached, and trikes (3-wheeled motorcycles). The Garden State requires motorcycle owners to have the following minimum coverages, although you are certainly able to increase the limitations to suit your needs:

  • $15,000 for bodily injury per person
  • $30,000 for total bodily injury per accident
  • $5,000 for property damage

With American Modern® insurance, you can choose from one of three types of coverage: full coverage, liability plus comprehensive, or liability only. Liability only coverage insures you for New Jersey’s minimum liability requirements. Liability plus comprehensive includes protection for theft or damage to your bike due to fire or weather. Full coverage includes all of this plus collision coverage in the instance you are involved in an accident. In addition, American Modern offers coverage for up to $30,000 in accessories.

How Much Does Motorcycle Insurance Cost?

Insurance costs for your motorcycle or ATV, just like those for your home or car, are dependent upon several factors. Your location, your age, and your vehicle all contribute to your premium. The level of coverage you choose will also affect the cost. With American Modern, you might be eligible for discounts, such as a homeownership discount and a multi-bike discount.

Safety Requirements

Whether you're purchasing a bike to save money on gas or as an addition to your collection, following the necessary safety precautions is of the utmost importance. All riders, including passengers, are required to wear a helmet.

Just like becoming a skilled driver, it takes time, patience, and practice to become a skilled motorcyclist. Driving a motorcycle throughout New Jersey is an acquired skill: the Garden State is one of the more densely populated states in the country, and with more people comes more vehicles on the roadways. NJM recommends taking an eligible rider course — and you might be eligible for a safety course discount, too!
