Is Your Spouse Automatically Covered on Your Car Insurance?

If you are married and live in the same household, many insurance companies require you to add your spouse to your auto insurance policy.

Once you tie the knot, contact your insurance company and update your policy. In addition to ensuring that you and your spouse remain protected from the financial losses of an auto accident, you may also benefit from the multi-vehicle/multi-driver factor, and the multiple-policy discount.

Some insurers will allow you to exclude your spouse if they maintain a separate insurance policy. However, you may be required to submit your spouse’s insurance information to exclude them from your policy.

To be safe, contact your insurer with any auto policy coverage questions for you and your spouse before you walk down the aisle.
