What Is Proof of Auto Insurance?

Proof of insurance is a physical or digital document that shows, at minimum, the insured’s name, identifying information about your car, your policy number, and the effective dates of your policy.

Auto ID Cards

Your auto insurer will send you an insurance ID Card with the basic information authorities need to confirm that you have insurance. It is recommended to keep this card in the glove compartment of your vehicle.

Some insurers allow you to access your insurance ID card online when you register for an account.

An insurance ID card acts as proof of insurance during a traffic stop or when exchanging insurance information after a car accident.

Declarations Page

A declarations page is usually the first page of an insurance policy. It usually includes:

  • Your insurance company name
  • Your policy number
  • Your effective dates
  • Your coverages and coverage limits
  • The costs of each coverage
  • Any endorsements you’ve added

A declarations page can be used as proof of insurance for your auto or home lender or your state’s motor vehicle agency. It can also act as proof of insurance if you don’t have your insurance ID card during a traffic stop.
